Student Profile
Sophia, 6th Grade
St. Sylvester School

Sophia enjoyed her 6th-grade year at Saint Sylvester and became increasingly active in school sports.

Sophia is a member of the school’s basketball team and has expressed great interest in developing her skills as a basketball player. Her Big Sibling, Meghan, says, “Going to her games is so fun – watching her and her friends grow up over the last few years, has been SO exciting to see!”

Sophia is also a devout humanitarian. For a long time, Sophia has been talking about donating her hair to Locks of Love and was growing it out for that reason. In June, she donated 18 inches!

Sophia has many career interests. She has talked about being a teacher, a PR agent like her Big Sib, and even a professional dog walker.

We serve 262 students, kindergarten through college, from:

  • 36 different Chicago neighborhoods

  • 26 different elementary schools

  • 29 different high schools

  • 19 different colleges across the United States

No child is refused admission into our program based on academic ability; in fact, 30% of our students work with Horizons for Youth staff to gain access to diversified education plans, such as IEPs and 504s. The Horizons for Youth program helps to ensure students receive a high-quality education and the life skills for success beyond the classroom.

Our current students follow in the footsteps of their Horizons for Youth predecessors, 84 percent of whom have either graduated from college or are still enrolled, persisting toward their degree. We commit to students who are ready to work hard, strive to do their best, and persevere against the challenges they face. We commit to students who commit to their futures.
